HOLLY RITTENBERRY

VP, CORPORATE RISK

1. What career advice would you give your younger self?
My career advice to my younger self would be to NOT GIVE UP when faced with a difficult challenge or task! Over the years, I have learned that I would much rather live with failure from trying than to live with the regret of not having tried at all. In college, there was a season when I was pursuing a major in business, the classes overwhelmed me, and I allowed myself and others to talk me out of considering this path. I was only 20 years old when I accepted a receptionist position at Cooper Steel and when I was offered new opportunities within the company, I always hesitated due to the same lack of confidence I felt when taking those classes. I’m very thankful the Coopers saw something in me that I did not see in myself, and that they did not take “no” for an answer- looking back now, I would have missed so many wonderful opportunities to learn and grow!

2. What personal qualities help you succeed in working in construction?
During my 35 years at Cooper Steel, the opportunities I have been given include payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, accounting, and now corporate risk. In each capacity, attention to detail, strong communication skills, the ability to be flexible, the willingness to learn, and a teamwork mentality have all been required. In these various roles, I learned different aspects of our business and in the process recognized that it takes every person in every department to make this business a success. My current role as VP of Corporate Risk has been a challenge as it requires our team to make decisions that can be difficult yet necessary. Our Corporate Risk, Legal, and Safety teams all collaborate when making these decisions as the depth of knowledge each brings to the decision-making table is invaluable. The commitment, pride, and gratitude I feel for being part of the Corporate Risk team and the Cooper Steel family drives me to do my best every day.

3. What is your favorite part about working in construction?
My absolute favorite part of working in construction is seeing our fabrication shop and field crews at work. The precision and attention to detail with which they work never ceases to amaze me. I do not think people outside of the construction industry know just what teamwork and commitment it requires to do this type of work and to do it well. From preconstruction to the final punch list item, it takes a team that works together well and those who always choose to do the right thing. Can you tell I’m proud to work for Cooper Steel?
