Twelve/Twelve Legacy Program Kicks Off New Year with Special Guest, Coach Rick Barnes
This week, Bedford County students and faculty gathered at Cooper Steel Arena to celebrate the start of a new year of the Twelve/Twelve Legacy Program.
Attendees enjoyed a catered lunch and program featuring remarks from Cooper Steel’s Gary Cooper and Jill Cook, who shared the vision behind the initiative and emphasized the impact participating students can have on the young lives they mentor.
The event’s keynote address was delivered by University of Tennessee men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes, who reflected on his life and the people who never gave up on him. He spoke about the importance of determination, leading by example, and showing up for others.
Brian Crews, Community Relations Director at Cooper Steel, moderated a panel discussion focused on the program’s impact and advice for rising participants. Panelists included school administrators Meredith Gilliland, Principal of Eakin Elementary School, and Dee McCullough, Assistant Principal at Shelbyville Central High School; Shelbyville Central High School Basketball Coach Shane Young; SCHS student-athletes Maggie Simon (cheerleading), Kaitlyn Burk (soccer), Brody Thomas (baseball), and Blake Leigh (football); and Cascade High School baseball player Wickey Parker.
Sixteen high school organizations are participating in the program this school year, each committed to fostering educational success, personal growth, and a positive culture through mentorship with local elementary students.
We are grateful to the students, faculty, Cooper Steel team members, and Coach Barnes for taking time out of their busy schedules to celebrate the start of what promises to be another strong year for the Twelve/Twelve Legacy Program.
